How to Conquer Your Cravings

The other day, my client and I were discussing the topic of nutrition. She was asking me specifically what she should be eating. I couldn't answer that.
  • I have a narrow scope of practice in the field of nutrition. Nutrition was only a section of my certification, so I would rather send her to a nutritionist who only focuses on customizing peoples daily meals and consumption.
    • Someone I would recommend is Rachel Sunley. She is a certified holistic health coach who works with people who are done with the yo-yo dieting and want to have a steady lifestyle of better eating.
  • EVERYONE’S BODY WORKS DIFFERENTLY
As frustrating as that is, it is true. Something that might work for your friend, might not work for you. It is a stubborn part of life but DON’T GIVE UP YET! You can find what works for you if you play around with these tips that does not require following a certain fad or diet…
  1. EAT FROM THE EARTH!

    • Start eating foods that are from this beautiful earth we live on. There are so many easy combinations of vegetables that you can throw together, sprinkle some salt, pepper, olive oil and any of your favorite spices, pop them in the oven and voila! You have a beautiful mix of your favorite veggies. I have been starting to post meals that I create on my instagram too so feel free to check that out if you're feeling stuck on what to make!
  2. USE YOUR RESOURCES!

    • Pinterest is a great way to find easy recipes to pack you meals with lots of nutrition. The only thing you have to watch out for are the ingredients being used! Try to pick recipes that mainly have whole foods and a good balance between fats and proteins too. The internet in general is packed with so much information on healthier food combinations that you can make into easy snacks or meals. USE IT!
  3. DRINK WATER!

    • When you drink water, it can suppress some of your appetite and make you feel fuller. This will prevent you from overeating during a meal. One of my FAVORITE tips to give my clients is to put lemon in your water. This will trick your tastebuds into thinking you are consuming food. THIS IS NOT A TIP ABOUT NOT EATING. Please eat and fuel your body. This is is ONLY for when you are craving unhealthy food.
  4. USE SMALLER PLATES!

    • It is okay if you want to get up for seconds, but if you use a smaller plate, you won't be able to overload your plate and end up stuffed. Imagine if you did this every day for dinner and what a difference it would make!
  5. EAT UNTIL YOU ARE 80% FULL!

    • This is the same ideas as eating until you are not hungry anymore, not until you are full. It stops you from over consuming which leads to the excess weight. The online article "Hara Hachi Bu: Eat Until You Are 80% Full" on Huff Post, (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/not-overeating_b_969910), explains in a very interesting approach on how training yourself to think this way can help.
  6. BE SMART ABOUT IT!

    • I am sure you are an intelligent human so this task should be a pretty easy one to follow. Is it a healthy choice? Could you pick something better for you? THEN DON'T EAT IT! Be smart about it!
  7. DISTRACT YOURSELF!

    • Often when I am being lazy and watching an episode of Friends (of course I watch Friends too), I find myself mindlessly eating food, and often food that isn't good for me. If I find myself wanting to do so, I get up and take a walk, or even going to my room helps.
  8. Last but not least, DO NOT STARVE YOURSELF!

    • So many people come to me with the thought that if they don't eat, they will lose weight. Although this is true maybe in the very beginning, it is TERRIBLE for you for the future. Your metabolism will SLOW DOWN. If you aren't consuming food, your body does not need to work because it does not have anything to digest. This will also affect your energy and your progress towards your goals.
I hope these tips will help you in the future so you can skip all the diets and weird nutrition programs you find. Don’t get me wrong, some “diets” are actually lifestyles which are good choices to make, but follow these tips first and see what happens. You might surprise yourself and become more creative with your recipes and meals.
I have a training style that goes really well with these tips. Often, my clients will get to their goals faster and feel better about their progress.
